Wallets and your secret phrase
Your secret phrase is your money. Nobody legit will ever ask for it.
A wallet is the app that holds your keys and asks for your approval before anything happens. Popular NEAR wallets are Meteor, HOT, Intear and MyNearWallet. NEKO's Connect Wallet button also offers:
- Nightly: a multi-chain wallet (NEAR, Solana, Sui and more) as a browser extension and a mobile app.
- Bitte: a web wallet, formerly Mintbase Wallet, that opens on its own site; used a lot for NEAR NFTs.
- Ledger: a hardware wallet. Your keys stay on the device and you confirm each transaction on it. Needs the NEAR app on the Ledger and a Chromium browser on a computer (Chrome, Edge, Brave).
When you create a wallet you get a secret phrase (12 or 24 words). Whoever has those words owns everything in the account. Write them on paper, keep them offline, and never type them into a website or send them to anyone.
Connecting a wallet to a site like NEKO only lets the site ask. Every transaction still needs your click in the wallet.
